LOAD is a Canadian ambient pop/alternative band formed by singer/songwriter Carrie Luce Forsythe and lead guitarist Yvhan Kindrachuk in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1995.
Luce (N.B.F.C.) and Kindrachuk (Fudge Tongue) originally formed with Jason Tait on drums (Red Fisher) and bassist Sean Hicks to form a Blondie cover band which turned into LOAD with Stephan Gislason on bass (Ragamaroons, Sara Somer Chai Ensemble). Luce and Hicks named the band LOAD.
Influenced by a multitude of genres , the music is dramatic, theatrical, deep and atmospheric. LOAD draws in a world of inspiration, transcending the stifling cage of categorization. One of the remarkable things about LOAD is the way such amazingly diverse and uniquely gifted people have been able to bring in their various strengths and influences into a band, and create music that is remarkably consistent, coherent and so powerful.
The band’s previous albums (Delicates released in 1996, and Encoded and Dirty, released in 1998) were lauded by critics and fans in Canada and the US. LOAD was in fact the very first band from Manitoba to ever be invited to showcase at the prestigious South By Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas in 1998. And based on the strength of their newest material it’s no surprise that they were invited to play at both Canadian Music Fest in Toronto and CMJ in New York in 2013.
LOAD played for the private inauguration party for Randy Bachman into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame after the Junos January 15, 2014.
LOAD was invited back to Austin to perform at SxSW in 2017 with the line up Luce, Hauser, Creasey, McCrea, Gardner.
The band has had a mixed line-up of guitarists and drummers. Considered the Spinal Tap of Winnipeg (no drummers were physically hurt in the making of LOAD) their ever changing rhythm section never disappoints … and the guitarist transitions are so smooth, LOAD doesn’t skip a beat. Each song sounds distinctly different from the last except clearly the melodic and sultry voice of Luce, magnetic front woman for the band, is what has held LOAD together. When asked however, Luce claims that Kyle Hauser is the current glue of LOAD. Even though every album has been a new incarnation with a completely different band of musicians, LOAD has a recognized sound and each album picks up right where it left off seamlessly.

“LOAD’s core three-piece (with help from drummer Darren Achorn and programming by James Barr of Portishead) explores pop, trip hop, atmospheric rock and even some dub snippets — all of which are held together by the clarity of Luce’s voice. Whether purring the catchy, melodic chorus of Bruce Lee or almost chanting the echoey, faraway vocal line of Inside My Heart, Luce is clearly what holds this Load together.”
JOHN KENDLE, WINNIPEG FREE PRESS (March 27, 2014)
“IT’S TRUE has got to be one of my new favourite albums of this year. It’s a great record, LOAD has definitely created some music to be proud of – and if you’re into trip rock, The Bends era Radiohead or ambient calm, you need to check them out.”
VELVET ROPE MAGAZINE
“LOAD is an impressive blend of musical fabrics: part fuzzrock, smoky jazz, nouveau basement abstraction and punky abandon – LOAD is eccentrically electric.”
JOHN LYONS, WINNIPEG FREE PRESS
“Led by the compelling presence of vocalist Luce, who can be reminiscent of Bjork and Tori Amos – LOAD is a post modern amalgam of jazz, blues, R&B and rock.”
JOHN KENDLE AND BARTLY KIVES, WINNIPEG FREE PRESS
“The members of LOAD never lower themselves to play straight-ahead, boring, derivative rock, instead creating a wide range of original, rock-based material.”
“Austin City Papers described LOAD as”Compelling jazz-rock adventurers” and “a cross between Portishead and Led Zeppelin” they were all this and more.”
DARRYL STERDAN, WINNIPEG FREE PRESS
“Vocalist LUCE, whose mastery of her instrument is immense, fronts a band of diverse and uniquely gifted people whose strengths and influences create a “blend of musical fabrics” – music that is dramatic, theatrical and atmospheric. “
MARTY GOLD, MANITOBA POST
“Carrie Luce Forsythe, “Luce”, has had a long, romantic, relationship with her band LOAD. Contributors have come and gone and LOAD has gone from one version of itself to another, and yet stayed the same…That fluidity has been the whole identity of LOAD. However, despite all of the contributors, LOAD has remained “a sound’. It’s a sound that people recognize. They have their own voice and it’s ambient, mystical, and atmospheric. That’s something that never goes away no matter who contributes.”
